Nigerian Navy originated from Nigerian Marine and it was formed in the year 1914. It is the sea branch of the Nigerian Armed Forces and among the largest navies on the African continent. Nigerian Navy is a federal government job which comes with many benefits such as stability of work and even salary and these endears people in seeking for employment in this sector. In as much as many people would wish to be recruited and work in this sector, many have failed in their attempts to join the Navy and this is because the position is very competitive and many don’t know what it takes to join. In joining the Nigerian Navy, there are two ways one can go about it. You can either choose DSSC (Direct Short Service Commissions) method or follow the ordinary recruitment procedure. Any method can lead you to this organization and make you one of the Navy officers in Nigeria.

The guidelines for the enlistment can be accessed on the Nigerian Navy Enlistment Portal which is currently opened till 14 November 2019 for interested candidates to apply online. Candidates are to note that all the processes ranging from online registration, aptitude test and the selection interview are FREE OF CHARGE. Candidates are advised to be wary of scammers and refrain from giving money to any individual under any guise.

Every candidate applying: must be Nigerians by birth, should possess a minimum of Second Class Upper Division for first degree holders and Upper Credit for HND holders. Male applicants must not be less than 1.68 meters tall while female applicants must not be less than 1.65 meters in height. Applicants must possess NYSC Discharge/Exemption Certificate and should be between 22 and 28 years by 20 February 2020, except for Imams/ Chaplains and Medical Consultants who should not exceed 30 years and 40 years respectively by 20 February 2020.


Applications are hereby invited from suitably qualified Nigerians for enlistment into the Nigerian Navy through the Direct Short Service Commission (DSSC) Course 27. Online registration starts on 3 October 2019 and closes on 14 November 2019. The departments and entry requirements are listed below.1 SEAMAN: BSc/HND in the following disciplines:

  1. Nautical Sciences.
  2. Criminology.
  3. Psychology.
  4. Sociology.
  5. Forensic Sciences.

Membership of relevant professional bodies will be an added advantage.


Bachelor’s degree or HND in Accounting/Banking and Finance. Membership of professional bodies like ICAN, ANAN, ACMA, ACCA, ACA will be an added advantage.


Bachelor’s Degree in Theology from a registered institution of theology from either of the following:

  1. Catholic Mission.
  2. Protestant Mission.

Applicants must have completed 2 years apprenticeship in Apostolic Ministry and be recommended from pastoral missions. In addition to qualifications required, applicants must be of male gender and duly ordained clergy of their respective Christian faith.


Bachelor of Education (B.Ed)/ B.Sc Ed in relevant fields. Holders of first degree with PGD Education in the following fields are also eligible:

  1. English Language.
  2. Mathematics.
  3. Physics.
  4. Chemistry.
  5. Biology.
  6. Bio chemistry.
  7. Microbiology.
  8. History.
  9. Library Science (B.Sc).
  10. Computer Science.
  11. Guidance and Counseling.
  12. French Language.
  13. Chinese Language.
  14. Arabic Language.


B.Sc or B Eng qualifications in the following fields:

  1. Naval Architecture/Ship Design.
  2. Mechanical/Marine Engineering.
  3. Electrical/Electronic Engineering
  4. Aircraft Engineering/Aeronautical Engineering.

Membership of Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria (COREN) will be an added advantage.


B.Sc, BA, HND or equivalent qualification in:

  1. Human Resources Management.
  2. Personnel Management
  3. Public Administration.

Membership of National Institute of Management and other relevant bodies will be an  added advantage.

7 HYDROGRAPHY: B.Sc or HND in the following fields:

  1. Cartography.
  2. Surveying/Geoinfomatics.
  3. Geophysics.
  4. Physical Oceanography.
  5. Geology.

Membership of National Institute of Statistics or proficiency in Computer Programming/Data Analysis would be an added advantage. Applicants with B.Sc degree in Physics and Mathematics must possess a Post Graduate Diploma in Land Survey to be eligible.

8 IMAM: BA/MA in Islamic Studies in the following:

  1. Islamic Studies (Qira’at).
  2. Islamic Studies (Hadith).
  3. Islamic Studies (Jurisprudence).
  4. Islamic Studies (Theology).

Diploma in Counseling Psychology will be an added advantage.

9  INFORMATION: B.Sc or HND in the following fields:

  1. Mass Communication.
  2. Journalism.
  3. Public Relations.
  4. Printing Technology.
  5. Cinematography.
  6. Television Production.
  7. Computer Technology (Desktop Publishing).

Membership of Nigerian Institute of Public Relations will be an added advantage.


B.Sc/B.Tech/ B.Eng in Computer Science or Computer Engineering. Priority will be given to candidates with relevant qualifications in:

  1. Website Development and Management.
  2. Networking and Network Administration.
  3. Programming Multimedia and Software Development.
  4. Server and Database Administration.
  5. Information and Cyber Security.

Certification in relevant fields will be an added advantage.


The following medical fields with requisite entry qualifications are available:

a. Consultants: Must be a fellow of National Postgraduate Medical College or West Africa College of Physicians or

Surgeons. Must possess current practicing license of the Medical and Dental

Council of Nigeria. Candidate’s age limit is 40 years by 20 February 2020.

  1. General Doctors/Dental Surgeons: MBBS, MBBCh or

equivalent. Must be fully registered by the Medical and Dental Council of

Nigeria and possess a current practicing license.

  1. Pharmacy:B.Pharm/Doctor Pharmacy degree and full

registration with the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria as well as have a current

practicing license.

  1. Medical Lab Science:Either a BMLS or AIMLS/

equivalent and be fully registered with the Medical Laboratory Scientist

Council of Nigeria as well as possess a current practicing license.

  1. Dental Therapist: HND Dental Therapy must possess

current professional practicing license.

  1. Radiographer: Minimum of BSc/HND in Radiography

with current practicing license.

  1. Physiotherapy: B. Physiotherapy or BMR (Bachelor

of Medical Rehabilitation). Must be registered with the Medical

Rehabilitation Therapist Registration Board of Nigeria (MRTB) and possess a

current practicing license.

  1. Optometry:Doctor of Optometry. Must be fully

registered optometrist, dispensing optician by the Optical Council of

Nigeria and have a current practicing license.

  1. Medical Records/Health Information Management:

Minimum of BSc/HND required with current practicing license.

  1. Dietician: B.Sc or HND Dietician/Nutrition. Must

be registered with Dietetics Council of Nigeria with current practicing


  1. Clinical Psychology: BSc/HND in Clinical

Psychology and Applied Psychology, with current practicing license.

  1. Biomedical Engineer:BSc/HND in Biomedical

Engineering with current practicing license.

  1. Public Health Officer:BSc/HND in either

Environmental Health or Community Health Information and Education. Must be

fully registered with the Environmental Health Officers Registrations

Council of Nigeria (EHORCON) and possess a current practicing license.

  1. General Nursing/Midwives:B.NSc RN/RM with

current practicing license. Post basic qualification in any of the

following fields will be an added advantage:

(1) Accident and Emergency Nurse.

(2) Intensive Care Unit Nurse.

(3) Peri-Operative Nurse.

(4) Ophthalmic Nurse

(5) Dialysis/Renal Nurse.

  1. Hospital Administration: BSc/HND Hospital Administration with current practicing license.
  2. MUSIC:

BA/HND in Music. Proficiency in any musical instrument will be an added advantage.

  1.  SPORTS/PT:

BA/HND in Physical & Health Education or Human Kinetics and Health Education. Proficiency in any physical sport will be an added advantage.


BSc/HND/B Eng in the following fields:

  1. Transport Management.
  2. Economics, Business Management or Marketing.
  3. Architecture.
  4. Catering/Hospitality Management.
  5. Civil Engineering.
  6. Quantity Survey.
  7. Structural Engineering.
  8. Estate Surveyor and Valuers.
  9. Final Certificate of Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology.


LLB and BL (Call to Bar Certificate and a minimum of 3 years post qualification experience required). LLM in International Maritime Law, International Law or Forensic Law is an added advantage.

Every year,the force tend to seek for qualified candidates to fill in certain positions and below is a list of requirements on how to join the navy;

1 Only Nigerians are qualified to apply.

2 One must meet up with physical,mental and psychological training to ascertain your physical,mental and medical fitness.

3 Applicants should be between 22 and 28 years of age by 20 February 2020. Except Chaplains/Imams and Medical Consultants who should not be more than 30 years and 40 years respectively.

4 Must pass the Medical Test

5 Applicant must meet up with minimum educational requirement i.e you have to earn at least 5 credits in NECO, GCE, WASSCE or other tests with mathematics and English.

6 You should not have any criminal records.

7 An applicant cannot be a member of any Secret Society, any Cult organization

8 DSSC applicants have to go through NYSC Youth Service (have a letter of exemption or discharge certificate) and have their higher education Diploma (HND, BSc or similar).

9 Applicants must be single,both male and female and the females must not be pregnant too.

10 The recommended height for male candidates is 1.68 meters tall and above and female applicants must be up to 1.65 meters and above tall.

Applicants will be shortlisted for a qualifying aptitude test. The date and time of the aptitudetest will be communicated via this website.

Applicants are to choose any of the following centers for the qualifying aptitude test:

Nigerian Navy Finance and Logistics College, Owerrinta, Imo State.

(1) Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Navy Town Ojo.

(2) Navy Town Secondary School, Navy Town Ojo.

  1. Port-Harcourt Centre:

(1) Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Borokiri.

(2)AirForce Secondary School, 115 Special Operations Group, Air Force Base.

  1. Sokoto Centre:

Army Day Secondary School, Giginya Barracks.

Applicants are to appear for the Aptitude Test with the following:

  1. Photocopies of Degree and NYSC Discharge Certificate.
  2. Parent/Guardian Consent Form.
  3. Acknowledgement Form.
